The Lord Is My Shepherd — Psalm 23

Finding rest and provision in the care of our Good Shepherd.

"The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul." — Psalm 23:1-3

I have read Psalm 23 hundreds of times, but it hit differently during finals week last year. I was running on caffeine and four hours of sleep, trying to balance studies, fellowship, and message preparation. My soul felt dry. Then during my quiet time, these familiar words stopped me: "He makes me lie down." Not suggests. Makes.

A shepherd makes sheep lie down when they are too restless to recognize their own exhaustion. I was that sheep — so busy serving God that I had forgotten to rest in Him. There is a difference between working for God and walking with God. David, who wrote this psalm, understood that. He was a king with enormous responsibilities, yet he described God not as his commander but as his shepherd.

The phrase "I lack nothing" is not about material wealth. David had seasons of poverty and danger. It means that with God as shepherd, nothing essential is missing. When I look at my life through the lens of what I lack — better grades, more time, a clearer future — I feel anxious. But when I look through the lens of Psalm 23, I see that I have the one thing that matters: a Shepherd who knows me, leads me, and restores my soul.

Even the valley of the shadow of death is not a dead end in this psalm — it is something we walk through. And we do not walk alone.

Prayer: Lord, You are my shepherd. Forgive me for acting as though I lack what I need. Teach me to lie down in Your green pastures and let You restore my soul. Amen.
