Stand Firm and See — Exodus 14:13-14

When the sea is ahead and the army is behind, God fights for you.

"Moses answered the people, 'Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.'" — Exodus 14:13-14

Last semester I faced a situation that felt like my own Red Sea. My research project was falling apart, my Bible student stopped responding to messages, and I was behind on everything. I felt trapped — unable to move forward, unable to go back. Every direction seemed blocked.

Moses spoke these words to a terrified nation. Behind them was the most powerful army in the world. Ahead was an uncrossable sea. Humanly speaking, they were finished. But Moses said something counterintuitive: "You need only to be still." In a moment that demanded action, God asked for stillness. Not passivity — but trust.

I have learned that "being still" does not mean doing nothing. It means stopping the frantic scramble to save myself and letting God work. When I finally stopped trying to fix everything on my own and brought it to God in prayer, things did not magically resolve overnight. But my heart changed. The panic subsided. And one by one, doors opened that I had not seen before.

The Israelites walked through on dry ground. Not around the sea, not over it — through it. God made a way through the very obstacle that seemed impossible. He does the same for us, often in ways we never expected.

Prayer: Father, when I am overwhelmed and see no way forward, help me to stand firm and be still. Remind me that You fight for me and that Your deliverance is always on time. Amen.
