Lord, Save Me! — Matthew 14:22-33
Peter walked on water until he looked at the waves instead of Jesus.
"'Come,' he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, 'Lord, save me!'" — Matthew 14:29-30
People often focus on Peter sinking, but I want to focus on something else: Peter walked on water. He actually did it. Out of twelve disciples in the boat, only one had the courage to step out. The other eleven stayed safe and dry — and they missed the experience of a lifetime.
I think about this whenever God calls me to do something that feels impossible. Last year I was asked to lead a large group Bible study for the first time. I am naturally introverted and the thought of standing in front of forty people made me want to stay in the boat. But like Peter, I heard Jesus say "Come," and I stepped out.
The first few weeks went well. Then problems came — attendance dropped, a key leader moved away, and I started doubting myself. Like Peter, I took my eyes off Jesus and looked at the wind and waves. I started sinking into anxiety and self-pity. But Peter's three-word prayer became my own: "Lord, save me!" It is the shortest and most honest prayer in the Bible.
What I love about Jesus's response is that He did not let Peter drown and then lecture him. "Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him." He saves first, then gently asks: "Why did you doubt?" The question is not accusation — it is an invitation to reflect. Why do I doubt when the One who commands the sea is standing right in front of me?
Prayer: Jesus, give me the courage to step out of the boat when You call. And when I start to sink, remind me that Your hand is already reaching for me. Lord, save me. Amen.
