Abide in Me — John 15:1-8
The secret to bearing fruit is not effort — it is connection to the vine.
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." — John 15:5
Of all the things Jesus could have said on His last night with the disciples, He chose to talk about a vine. Not strategy, not theology, not a five-year plan — a vine and its branches. The image is deceptively simple, but it confronts something deep in me: my tendency to produce fruit through sheer effort rather than abiding.
This past year I threw myself into campus ministry. I organized events, prepared messages, led Bible studies, and mentored younger students. From the outside it looked fruitful. But inside I was drying up. My quiet times became task preparation rather than time with God. I was a busy branch trying to manufacture grapes without drawing life from the vine.
Jesus says "apart from me you can do nothing." Not "you can do less" or "you will be less effective." Nothing. That word humbles me. All my activity, all my programs, all my careful planning — without genuine connection to Jesus, it produces nothing of eternal value. Branches do not strain to produce grapes. They simply stay connected, and the fruit comes naturally.
Abiding is not another task on my to-do list. It is the posture of my whole life — staying close to Jesus through prayer, through His word, through honest fellowship. When I abide, fruit surprises me. Conversations I did not plan become life-changing. A simple word of encouragement bears fruit I never see. The vine does the work; the branch just stays connected.
Prayer: Jesus, forgive me for trying to bear fruit apart from You. Teach me to abide — to remain in Your love, Your word, and Your presence — and trust You for the fruit. Amen.
